01

Project plan

Use it for: Kicking off any project, from a website launch to a kitchen renovation.

Five branches cover what most plans forget: what success looks like and how you will measure it, what is in and out of scope, the milestones, who owns what, and what could go wrong. Fill each branch, then turn milestones into checkboxes to track progress.

Meeting notes

Use it for: Taking notes in a meeting without losing the decisions in a wall of text.

Attendees and agenda go in before the meeting. During it, each agenda item grows its own branch of notes. Decisions get a branch of their own so they are easy to find later, and every action item is a checkbox with an owner and a date.

Brainstorm

Use it for: Wide-open idea capture when you do not know the shape of the answer yet.

A topic in the middle and empty idea branches around it. Write fast and do not sort while you write. Once the ideas stop coming, drag related ones together and the structure appears on its own.

Weekly plan

Use it for: Planning a week of work or study with a checklist for every day.

One branch per weekday, each with task checkboxes. Ticked tasks roll up into a progress figure on the day and on the week, so you can see at a glance how far through the week you are.

SWOT analysis

Use it for: Weighing a business idea, a career move or a product decision.

Strengths and weaknesses are internal; opportunities and threats come from outside. Four branches keep the two apart. Try the matrix layout for this one: it lays the four branches out as a classic 2×2 grid.

Book notes

Use it for: Summarising a book chapter by chapter so you remember it a year later.

Start with the one big idea of the book, then a branch per chapter. Quotes get their own branch, and the last branch asks the only question that matters: what will you do differently now?
